The 2019 China·Dujiangyan Water-releasing Festival will take place on April 4-7 in northwestern Chengdu's Dujiangyan City. The city of Dujiangyan is named after the world famous ancient irrigation system, which is still in use now. The spectacular water conservancy project has benefited the people living in the Chengdu Plain for over two thousand years, and the water releasing festival is held every year to commemorate Li Bing (about 302BC-235BC) and his son, who headed the construction of the system on the Min River. The annual event marks the beginning of a busy spring sowing period in Chengdu.
The Water Releasing Ceremony, an exciting live show of paying homage to ancient wisdom and praying for blessings for the local residents, will be staged at 10:30 on April 5 at the venue for live performances inside the Dujiangyan Scenic Spot. The ancient way used to control the torrential water of the Min River will be shown at the ceremony. And professional performers will present the steps of the solemn ceremonial ritual to worship ancestors and release water as their forefathers did more than 2,000 years ago.
Some other sideshows, including performances featuring local folk culture and customs (April 5-6) and an exhibition of tourist cultural and creative products (April 5-7) will be presented during the event.
